EL CEMENTERIO
Just a few meters from the wall that divides El Paso, TX, and Ciudad Juarez, a "cemetery" of abandoned belongings was discovered on the Mexican side of the border. This series is part of the WHAT REMAINS project, which explores the stories of migration through the objects immigrants carry with them up to the final point of their journey, right before crossing into the United States. These once-essential survival items, photographed in shelters and camps, are forced to be left behind when they arrived to the border wall. Among the discarded items, dozens of clothes, shoes, and plush toys were found scattered across the desert. For children, this moment is especially painful—they are forced to part with their most cherished companions, the toys that have provided comfort and protection throughout their uncertain journey.
